Boon (dbL)
Boon was 4 years old when I pulled his shoes. He was so bracey in his body, he felt like he was in his late 20s. He was functionally sound to ride, but structurally, his hooves and body were a mess. He was started too early and had SI issues that made him drag and square off his hind toes. After 2 years on a 2-4 week corrective trim schedule, he came together pretty good and became supple to trim and quit dragging his toes. The owners moved away so I couldn’t continue trimming him.

I prefer the look of the pre-trimmed foot but in my experience, horses prefer the feel of the post-trimmed foot. It takes 3 weeks to grow back. In my opinion, it feels the best in the second week. That’s why I prefer a 2 week trim cycle. After 2 weeks, the outer wall is long enough to load the coronary band, causing reduced blood flow and discomfort.
December 2019 - Boon is right hand dominant on his forehand. This is his right front. He got a little off schedule over the summer and missed a couple of trims. Luckily he was living in a track system with his buddy Magic on sandy and gravely footing. I’ll try to keep him on a 3 week schedule now and get this wall separation cleared up in a few more trims.
