Sante (dbL)
January 2021 - Pulled shoes and set up trim
The shoeing job looks good from the top but after closer inspection this is a few millimeters off. This causes compensation, pain, bone erosion ( including upper joints ), and soft tissue damage. It affects the back and even the TMJ, which causes dental issues.
The medial bar of this shoe was set in too far and it was making contact with the frog.
The heels were trimmed flat for the shoe and weren’t balanced properly to the leg. The medial heel is too long and starting to bend inward. This causes pinching where the hard horn meets the soft bulbs at the widest part of the frog where the collateral grooves end. This is causing the bruise/rupture at the medial heel bulb. Later stages with more imbalance and distortion can also cause more of an abscess.
This is 3 different angles of the same front foot. The top row is before pulling shoes. The middle row is pre trim. The bottom row is post trim. I like including the view from the heel quarter ( middle vertical row ). The center pic is missing because I forgot to get that one. This view gives information about the back and side of the foot at the same time so you can see how the transition from the soft bulbs to the hard horn is progressing.
Respecting The Palmar Contours. Conforming the heel horn around the seat of corn to improve comfort and increase stride length. This allows the horse to commit their weight into the heels throughout the entire touch down phase of the stride or just when they’re standing around. The frog is part of this relationship too so the dead tissue must me trimmed away and shaped in alignment with its growth corium.
Second trim at 5 weeks after pulling shoes. Sante has been ridden comfortably on trails since his shoes were pulled and he was set up to build better feet.
