Jasmine (dbL)
November 2021 - Pulled shoes and set up trim
This is an excessive build up of retained dead sole giving the illusion of concavity. I added a mark up of what the actual live sole plane is vs the retained dead sole plane. I leave this in place until it starts to show signs of separating on its own as the live sole gains thickness from frequent proper trimming.
The red line shows the false concavity and the blue line shows the true concavity. I’ll try to leave the retained dead sole in place as the live sole gains more depth. This helps keep the horse comfortable through the process.

The red arrows point to the transition between the old contracted hoof capsule and the new one coming in less contracted.

This is about 2 years progress. The back of the foot has become more relaxed, open, and engaged but I haven’t been able to bring the heels down much. The reason is that the sole at the toe hasn’t built enough yet ant the ddft isn’t ready for a big heel correction yet. Due to a deficit of live sole at the toe and a considerable amount of the solar rim of P3 missing from years of chronic toe loading, the correction shouldn’t be forced. The goal is to slowly engage the soft tissue in order to build a cushion for the remaining coffin bone. This allows the horse to lean back and slowly improve the coffin bone angle by growing a new hoof capsule according to the new improved postural changes. This takes time but it’s a sustainable remedy. The following uploads will show the lateral view with the deficit of sole.

Lateral view showing deficit of sole, future heel correction, and future hairline position.
Moving a lot better after a couple of years of corrective trimming to improve the whole horse. This wasn’t easy for Jasmine as she’s around 20 years old with a lot of damage from years of wearing steel shoes. My goal is to keep her improving so she can continue to give riding lessons comfortably. She’s great at it, needs the movement, and seems to like doing it.
