Hershey was living in a dirt paddock with a few other herd mates when I pulled his shoes and started his bare foot rehab. It was a wet year so it was muddy much of the time. Hershey was used as a lesson horse during this rehab.

A lot of people have been told to “grow out some hoof capsule depth” by a vet. When they say this they recommend going 6-8 weeks in between trims. This just causes more dead sole retention but they’re not looking for live vs dead sole on X-rays. They’re just looking for the coffin bone to have adequate distance above the ground. Trimming to build reduces the hoof capsule length and increases the soft tissue and live sole depth, which creates a shorter wider hoof capsule with deeper live sole and soft tissue supporting the coffin bone higher in the foot.
